Cordova Allows the Same HTML5 Application to Run Across a Range of Mobile OSes

Windows Phone and its connatural development platform together allow you to create beautiful Metro-style applications with ease. Windows Phone in partnership with Nokia is starting to find its way into more and more pockets. 

Research firm Gartner Inc. has furnished a report which states that the future for the Microsoft OS seems very promising. In its latest data it reveals that if you are a smartphone app developer then this market fragmentation means you either have to choose which OS to target or write the same application multiple times using the diverse range of languages these phones require.

MSDN Magazine author Colin Eberhardt in a blog titled “Develop HTML5 Windows Phone Apps with Apache Cordova” introduces Apache Cordova, a framework for creating cross-platform mobile applications using HTML5 and JavaScript. In this article he demonstrates how it can be used to develop applications for Windows Phone.

Cordova also provides a set of standard APIs for accessing the functionality that’s common across different smartphones. Some of these functionalities include:

  • Application lifecycle events
  • Storage (HTML5 local storage and databases)
  • Contacts
  • Camera
  • Geolocation
  • Accelerometer
